Speaker's Notes: (Also available at presentation link)

In Waterloo Region single person households needing food support rose from 27% in 2013 to 50% in 2016 and we decided to act on that.

We decided to give to the Waterloo Region foodbank which uses 97% of their funds for its charitable program.

We purchased packs of Gatorades rather than single bottles, but we are selling these bottles for less than the convenience store

Over 1/3rd of the people that The Foodbank of Waterloo helps are under 18
As students ourselves we can testify that a full stomach is critical to learning
And over 80% of teachers say that hungry students have difficulty concentrating resulting in lower academic achievement.

So, to summarize. What value did we create? 91 meals because though Waterloo is a friendly city, hunger is not welcome here, and you can’t learn with an empty stomach.

Our thinking was originally to stay on campus as that would save us hours in commute time.
There wasn’t as many people on campus as we had assumed there would be.

Go to a different place (uptown had a festival) where there was reportedly a lack of drinks so we would’ve been addressing a need there.
As well, -More time spent implementing idea

Our idea can easily be implemented, and doesn’t require any special skills
Despite the fact that we weren’t in an optimal location, we still made a profit
This idea holds a lot of promise, as with more optimization and familiarity with the area a lot more value can be created.

  1. Hi, Jason. Can I suggest that you embed your presentation directly into this post? It would be so much easier for your readers than having to copy and paste the link into a browser window. You could then write a little more to fill in the blanks of the presentation. Perhaps a description of what the challenge was all about? There are also a couple of slides that are very vague because what you discussed in your presentation isn't obvious from the slide itself (eg. "What we would do differently" and "Looking to the Future" slides).

  2. I cannot embed the presentation however I have made it a hyperlink. As for the descriptions, those are in the speaker's notes and accessible through the link.
