Meteor Challenge - 1.1: Update

I would like to know where each of you are at with the progress of your group design challenge.  How did the design pitches impact your thinking about your solution?  How did the trip to Home Depot impact your thinking?  Did your design change as a result of either event?  What modifications have you made?  What other things did you learn about design, materials, prototyping or anything else?

We recently went to Home Depot on Friday as a class to shop for components with which to build our design. Our solution was a pneumatic potato gun; similarly, two other groups are also doing potato guns albeit using combustion.

Prior to visiting Home Depot, we also conducted design pitches and found our supplies online in preparation. Through the design pitches, the feedback received by each group doing a potato gun was similar thought my group specifically got cool feedback about air escaping around our projectile because we are using a pneumatic system. Our solution to this was to use a compressible tight-fitting projectile such as a tennis ball. Our Home Depot trip also didn't go as planned, the store lacked many supplies we had planned on using and we ended up having a 1.5" barrel with a 3" chamber rather than a 3" barrel and a 5" chamber. Because of this, we will also have to change our projectile.

This experience has made me more comfortable and familiar with PVC and ABS parts and next time I go shopping for such parts I will have a clearer idea of what to look for and buy.
